Community Spotlights

Black and Good is an online community for Black people interested in entrepreneurship and leadership. Our mission is to ensure that you have access to the tools, knowledge, skills, and resources you need to build or further develop your leadership abilities or business that leads to a better life for yourself and the people around you.

Why does community exist?

The Black community is often hailed for our resilience and entrepreneurial spirit; however, we do not often hear from Black people operating their businesses at scale.

Due to this, our aim is to upskill our community through our short training courses. Community members can gain a variety of skills that can help them grow as leaders or sustain a successful business whilst also being able to connect through various event series we host permitting the community to learn from fellow entrepreneurs or experts along with a safe space to network.

In addition to this, we exist to support by providing opportunities via our opportunities board, weekly articles, and resource hubs. These aim to equip, inspire, and signpost the latest business tools or opportunities to our members.

Last and most importantly, we want to amplify the voices of our community members. The community platform celebrates its members and assists them to promote their work or business.

In this case study, we will share two spotlights on some of our community members and their businesses.

Meet Priscilla Vivian, a 33-year-old Psychological Counsellor, Mental Health Educator and Mindfulness Facilitator. Priscilla founded Vivify Therapy in 2019 to increase accessibility to culturally informed mental health support.

Vivify Therapy was founded in 2019 to increase accessibility to culturally informed mental health support. Through individual counselling and psycho-educational workshops - Priscilla supports individuals and teams to meet their mental health goals through co-creating a safe space and a trusting relationship where you can freely explore your feelings, the stories you carry and deepen your connection to your intuition.

She combines decade-long mindfulness practice with evidence-based psychological interventions to help clients build self-compassion and a deeper awareness of behavioral patterns to thrive at work and consciously create the life they desire. I have a special interest in supporting Black folks. She said “Together, we'll explore what your identity means to you and how to identify and release internalised cultural limitations. Working at your own pace, you'll be supported to find fresh ways of seeing yourself.”

Priscilla took part in our online training on how to be a good community leader. She shared it was super helpful for her as she was preparing to launch her community and wanted to learn how to serve people better and become a better leader.  She went ahead to urge people to support Black businesses as this helps to create equity in communities that have been disproportionately disadvantaged. She shared, “You are teaching black children that their dreams are valid and to invest in themselves”.

Meet Beatrice Kaputakapua, a storytelling coach and consultant. Born and raised in Italy by Congolese parents, she spent a good part of her life trying to figure out how to master the art of communication between two cultures and three languages (Italian, French, Tshiluba).

Fascinated by the richness of the unlimited ways of thinking and the different media at our disposal, she threw herself into the communication world in her 20s. Since then, she absorbed the principles and worked in the field of PR, Journalism (Radio, Photojournalism, Documentary), and Communication in 3 continents and 5 languages (in case it wasn’t clear that she loved those!).

Prize Laureates, a train ride to New York to connect with the first African businessman in Wall Street and a car ride between the two sides of Istanbul, she nurtured her work ethos and developed the habits that help her to be creative.

She also partners with organisations that are doing good for the world to inspire and motivate internal and external audiences through stories. She has been featured on the BBC and Talk Radio and her clients refer to her as a “storytelling champion.” Beatrice is the mother of two young children, she is 36 and lives in London.

Speaking of Black businesses and why people should support them, Beatrice said “There are billions of voices out there but being unique is what will make you stand out and connect to others. Your voice, your authenticity, matter. Buying from Black businesses is a small step one can take to rebalance the scale.”
