Providing remote access to doctors, Charlotte Odunlade-Akeju from Tremendoc

Nigeria’s healthcare system is one of the most underfunded and least robust systems in the world. This means that there is a shortage of access to doctors in the country. This is where the technology of ‘telemedicine’ comes in, offering easy access to those in need of a doctor via their mobile devices.

Charlotte Odunlade-Akeju is one of the women leading the telemedicine charge in Nigeria. She is the Chief Business Director at Tremendoc Limited, an organisation enabling access to licenced doctors 24/7. Odunlade-Akeju uses her drive and optimism to provide business solutions and facilitate connections through a variety of businesses she runs across several sectors of Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. As the Chief Business Director at Tremendoc Limited, she is passionate about the reforms and innovation that technology is having in Africa’s healthcare sector.

As Nigeria's fastest-growing telemedicine company offering quality affordable access to doctors via a mobile solution, Tremendoc believes telemedicine is the first step in solving the deficiencies with accessing healthcare in Africa. Odunlade-Akeju and her founding team built Tremendoc out of a personal need. As young parents, they recognised the growing need to have unlimited access to doctors without the pressure of logistics or high costs. This made the team come together, beginning the process for what would eventually become Tremendoc.

Tremendoc is easily accessed using a mobile phone. With their technology, users can connect with a doctor via audio, video or chat. On the same application, they can review their doctor's notes, schedule follow-up sessions and lots more.

Since setting up the business, the team have faced challenges with funding, and sourcing the right team of engineers to build the product. Access to funds and talent, especially in Nigeria’s healthcare sector can be tough, but the adoption of new technologies on the continent is even tougher. However, the pandemic enabled them to demonstrate the vast possibilities of telemedicine, and to date, they have completed 200,000 consultations, with over 80,000 users and 15 partnerships.

Telemedicine increases access to care, it is more cost-effective and is convenient than many traditional methods. The Tremendoc app can be accessed via the app store on Apple devices, as well as the Google Play store.
